Cinque Terrre

This cluster of romantic villages will intoxicate you with its grandeur.
If you miss the five villages that make up the Cinque Terre (literally 'five lands'), you will have bypassed some of Italy's most extraordinary countryside. (It is a Unesco World Heritage site and on the World Monument Fund list.) But blink as the train zips between tunnels and miss them you will.
Mountains covered by terraced vineyards and countless dry stone walls drop precipitously into the sea. Wine growers use monorail mechanisms to get themselves up and the grapes down, while olive groves embrace lower slopes. Tourism long ago overtook fishing and viniculture as the main local industry.
